India is now ERG’s largest Legal Research applicant market.

More than 40 Legal Research applications have been received from India, with more than 50 India-based applicants across the wider ERG intake. Interest includes students from Gujarat National Law University, National Law University Delhi and law schools across the country. These institutions are named only to show the reach of the applicant pool. They are not presented as formal partners.

The first India project will examine ANI Media Pvt. Ltd. v OpenAI OpCo LLC and the treatment of copyrighted news in model training. Contributors will work across ten connected sections covering copyright in news, electronic storage, fair dealing, model outputs, publisher economics, comparative law and possible reform.

The Delhi High Court decision dated 24 July 2026 concerned ANI’s request for interim relief. The Court refused the injunction, but the ruling did not finally decide the lawsuit. ERG’s report will explain the reasoning, the limits of the decision and the questions that remain open.

Jadyn Pitt, ERG’s Legal Director and Trustee, developed the project and will coordinate the research and final editorial review with the India team.

This is the start of a wider programme intended to give students serious research experience and clear credit for strong work.
